Terms of Service

Effective March 29, 2026

By using LegalSeal, you agree to these terms. They are written in plain English because legal tools should be understandable.

1. LegalSeal Is a Tool, Not a Legal Service

LegalSeal is a software tool that generates cryptographic verification receipts. It is not a law firm. It does not provide legal advice. It does not create an attorney-client relationship between you and LegalSeal or its creators.

Using LegalSeal does not guarantee compliance with any court rule, bar association requirement, or regulatory standard. It is your responsibility to determine whether LegalSeal is appropriate for your jurisdiction and practice area, and to comply with all applicable rules independently.

2. The Seatbelt Disclaimer

LegalSeal provides a cryptographic record of attorney attestation. It does not guarantee protection from sanctions, malpractice claims, or bar complaints.

Think of it like a seatbelt. A seatbelt reduces your risk in an accident, but it does not prevent accidents and it does not guarantee you walk away unharmed. LegalSeal is one layer of documentation among many that attorneys should maintain as part of a responsible AI compliance practice. It is not a substitute for thorough document review, independent citation verification, or sound professional judgment.

3. No Bar Number Verification

LegalSeal does not verify that the bar number you enter belongs to a licensed attorney in good standing. It does not check bar registrations, confirm active licensure, or validate credentials against any state bar database.

You are solely responsible for the accuracy of the attorney name, bar number, and jurisdiction you provide. Entering false or inaccurate credentials is your responsibility, not ours.

4. No Timestamp Authority

Timestamps in LegalSeal verification receipts are generated locally by your browser using your device's system clock. They are not verified, certified, or issued by an independent third-party timestamp authority (such as an RFC 3161 compliant TSA).

This means the timestamp reflects whatever time your device reports at the moment of attestation. If your device clock is inaccurate, the timestamp will be inaccurate. LegalSeal does not independently confirm or guarantee the accuracy of any timestamp.

5. Open Source License

The LegalSeal protocol and its source code are released under the MIT License. The full source code is available on GitHub.

The software is provided "as is," without warranty of any kind, express or implied, including but not limited to the warranties of merchantability, fitness for a particular purpose, and noninfringement. This is a direct consequence of the MIT license under which the protocol is distributed.

6. Limitation of Liability

LegalSeal and its creators, contributors, and maintainers are not liable for any damages arising from your use of, or inability to use, this tool. This includes direct, indirect, incidental, consequential, and punitive damages, regardless of the cause of action.

This limitation applies whether the claim is based on breach of contract, tort (including negligence), strict liability, or any other legal theory, even if we have been advised of the possibility of such damages.

LegalSeal is a free, open-source tool provided at no cost. You use it at your own risk.

7. Attorney Responsibility

The reviewing attorney remains solely responsible for all work product, regardless of whether a LegalSeal verification receipt has been generated.

Creating an attestation does not transfer, reduce, or modify the attorney's professional obligations in any way. Your duties of competence, diligence, and candor to the tribunal exist independently of any tool you use. A LegalSeal receipt documents that you attested to reviewing a document — it does not validate the quality, accuracy, or completeness of that review.

You are the attorney. The responsibility is yours.
